Craftsman Comfort
c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 1 1 4
When it was time to renovate
the badly weathered exterior
of Brian and Emily Hammers’s
home, the couple knew what
they were after. “We wanted
the outside of the house to
reflect the Craftsman style of
the early
20
th century inside
the house,” says Emily. The
couple liked the character
of the existing lap siding, so
instead of tearing it off, Brian
meticulously restored it, pulling
nails, filling, and sanding, board
by board. Then they replaced
the old plastic porch overhang
with a shingled awning that
matches the home’s roof.
The final touch: the iconic
Craftsman tapered columns
supported by stone bases.
“These pillars really added that
Craftsman dimension we were
reachingfor,” Emily says.

The Dream:
“We
wanted a new entry
that looked as if it
had been originally
intended, reflecting
the architectural
style of the house.”
Classical Taste
The front of Kevin and Geri
Kirkpatrick’s home was flat and
uninteresting After researching
the Southern Colonia^Greek
Revival style of the facade,
Kevin designed a peaked
portico and columns for the
entry that look perfectly
integral with the home.
“We created a portico that
enhances the beauty of our
house while remaining true
to detailing and proportions
of the style,” says Kevin.
